How did you get started?
I started reading tarot and also became a witch in my early 20’s after university. I connected deeply with the visual aspect of the tarot and loved the potential of what it can provide an insight and meaning for someone’s life.
How my online shop Freyja’s Daughter was born…
During the darkest moments of my winter, I turned to tarot and it was an anchor in the dark, cold winter months. During this time I decided that I wanted to go deeper into my understanding and study of tarot, and decided to study each card in depth and try and collate images to recreate each card’s meaning. This is the Blood Bread & Roses Tarot I have created. I called the deck “Blood, Bread & Roses” after the groundbreaking book by Judy Grahn, whom I read in my early 20’s and whose book was so influential in my feminism and understanding of the women’s spirituality movement, and sexuality. So it felt right to do so.
So the deck creation led to an online shop in which to sell it in, which led to pursuing my professional services more intensely. It has been a business venture that has been enlightening and inspiring. Not only from a creative standpoint but also an entrepreneurial voyage of discovery.
What is the inspiration behind your business/creative process?
The inspiration for me behind my business and creative process is my love of tarot and all things magick and witchy. The opportunity to be able to make this my work and focus means that it isn’t work at all, but provides a great deal of joy and fulfillment, not to mention deepens my connection with Spirit and the Divine Feminine on a daily basis.
How did you make your first 5 sales?
My first five tarot reading sales were done at a psychic brunch I read at every few months. My first five product sales of my deck were on my website freyjasdaughter.com, and on Etsy.com/ca/freyjasdaughter. Selling a service vs a product is very different and has meant that I have had to adjust my sales strategy for success in each channel.
What do you like/dislike about pop-ups?
I love popups because they offer a fun environment and clientele that is open to and interested in what I have to offer. The demographic is usually younger, with a disposable income available to spend on the luxury services and items I have on offer. Also, the other vendors present also are potential new clients, and friends. I have gotten to meet and chat with some great entrepreneurs, and business people who have offered great advice for a startup business like me. Plus it is a great way to personally connect with potential new clients, and as such a good opportunity for promotion and advertising.
What I dislike about popups is that sometimes the vendor fee is too high, or the traffic and sales is not sufficient to cover the time and vendor expenses.
What was your experience like at The MRKT?
I found the event promoters at The MRKT were professional, knowledgeable and extremely well-organized. As it was my first popup event EVER, they were patient and helpful and made the new experience enjoyable while reducing my anxiety. I also had a great experience at the event, meeting and chatting with many new clients and read for a whole host of attendees and vendors alike.
What was your experience like at the MRKT Bootcamp (or with MRKT Bootcamp E-Guide)?
I found the MRKT Bootcamp E-Guide extremely well put together, informative and professionally laid out. It was a huge help in preparing me for this new experience and providing me with the knowledge to be successful. Highly recommended! And also a tool I can refer to again and again.
What advice can you give to a first-time vendor?
Just do it! You won’t regret it and you will learn a lot. Also to read the MRKT Bootcamp E-Guide and ask lots of question. Finally…. Promote, Promote, Promote…. Everywhere! Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Etsy events… you name it. People need to know you are out there.
